Reasons to Consider Breast Implant Removal/Revision
Some women change their minds about breast augmentation after having had implants for a time. In these cases, breast implants can simply be removed. It is possible that skin laxity, caused by the sudden loss of volume, may accompany removal alone. If this is a concern, Dr. Chatson will discuss breast lift surgery during your initial consultation.
Breast implant removal may be necessitated by:
- Capsular contracture
- Leak or rupture
- Bisected implant (double bubble)
- Implant ripples or wrinkles
Implant failure, such as wrinkles and deflation, is more common with saline breast implants. Silicone breast implants tend to hold their shape and consistency for a longer period of time. Form stable breast implants (gummy bear), an advanced silicone option, will retain their shape even in cases of implant rupture, allowing gummy bear implants to produce results longer than other options.
Desiring a different sized or shaped chest can also lead to implant revision. So too can a rare condition called breast implant illness. No matter your reason, if you would like to speak with Dr. Chatson about your options, please call our Nashua or North Andover office to schedule your consultation today.
About Breast Implant Revision
Breast implant removal involves the removal of implants alone. When simply removing, additional treatments may be needed to restore firmness and lift to the breasts. These same treatments may need to be combined during breast implant revision to help ensure your new results complement your current figure and meet your updated needs. Dr. Chatson will discuss these things as appropriate during your initial consultation.
Whenever possible, Dr. Chatson follows the existing breast augmentation incisions to help guard against additional scaring. However, each breast implant revision procedure is unique and considerations must be made for the individual situation. Breast implant revision must be tailored to the exact needs of the patient. Dr. Chatson will take the time to fully understand your needs before customizing your procedure.
If you are having new implants placed, you can choose a different size, shape, and type for revision surgery. This can allow you to upgrade to a newer, more natural-looking and feeling implant option. These newer options will also last longer than older implants, making them a wise decision for many of our patients.
Your new implants can be placed above the pectoral muscles or underneath depending on your specific goals. Revision is intended to improve results, which may include repositioning implants to enhance the overall contours of your frame. We will help you understand what different options might look like on your body during the planning phase of your breast implant revision surgery.
Recovery from Breast Implant Revision
Similar to breast augmentation, you will need time to recover following breast implant revision surgery. It may be five to seven days before you feel comfortable returning to work and an additional three to five weeks before you can resume all normal activities. Dr. Chatson will assess your progress during follow-up visits and let you know when it is safe to fully return to “normal.”
Some bruising and swelling will be present after breast implant revision surgery. Compression garments, medications, and non-strenuous exercises can all help with this. Walking, in particular, can assist with swelling.
Your comfort is a top priority to Dr. Chatson and our staff. We will take every care to make sure you are safe and taken care of from the moment you enter our office through your final follow-up visit. We are committed to providing the best experience and producing the most reliable results. We welcome the opportunity to meet you, understand your needs, and begin the process of helping you reach your goals.
