In short, yes, male breast reduction is a permanent solution for extra tissue in male breasts if you maintain a healthy, active lifestyle after your procedure. Concerns over whether male breasts will grow back after surgery are common among our male patients. However, for most patients, a one-time correction of the condition, which often occurs during puberty when some males begin to develop excess breast tissue, is all that is required.
That being said, there are reasons that enlarged male breasts may reoccur. If you have significant weight gain, fatty tissue in your breasts is likely to be part of that gain. Also if your condition arose from steroid usage or the side effects of medication, further use of the same substances can lead to a recurrence.
In consultation with Dr. George Chatson, you can discuss your concerns about the cause of your excess breast tissue and if you are at risk for development of larger breasts in the future.
